The group's mission is clear: to explore and expand upon the music of Africa (particularly West Africa), and its deep connections to American popular music and other diasporic styles. The group's name is drawn from a classic album by the legendary Senegalese band Orchestra Baobab, and is simultaneously a reference to the golden era of post-independence music in West Africa, as well as the nomadic lifestyle of modern working musicians.
